Aberdeen Airport opened in 1934 to link
North Scotland with London. The airfield
became a RAF Dyce, during World War II.
Fighter aircraft were based here to
provide protection from bombing raids but
airfield was bombed by the Luftwaffe on
26 July 1940 and 27 August 1940,
no damage was reported.

The airport was nationalized in 1947 and
was transferred to the British Airports
Authority (BAA) in 1975.

With the discovery of North Sea oil,
helicopter operations began and Aberdeen
Airport became the world's largest
commercial heliport. More than half of all
aircraft movements are helicopters. In
October 2014 Aberdeen airport was sold
to a consortium of Ferrovial and
Macquarie Group.

Aberdeen Airport is looking to extend the
runway for larger modern aircraft to fly to
destinations across the Mediterranean,
North Africa and North America.
